Well, I didn’t get any outfit photos taken this weekend, but I have a pretty good excuse—we were busy having fun! Claire and I ran a 5K, and she absolutely crushed it. She took almost three minutes off her best time, finishing in 23:01! She was the 5th female overall and 1st in her age group. Proud mom over here! I finished just 8 seconds away from my own best time, which is the closest I’ve been in quite a while, so I was pretty happy with that too. Avie had a soccer game that her team won, and we couldn’t have asked for better weather. I also went to see Verity with some friends. It was decent, although I don’t think they quite captured the darkness of the book.
And now it’s back to reality! This week is packed with meetings for me, make-up cross country meets for Claire before her conference meet next week, and plenty of swim practices for both girls. Basically, we’re entering one of those weeks when getting out the door without forgetting something feels like an accomplishment.
Since I don’t have new weekend outfits to share, I pulled together some of the work looks I’ve been wearing lately. Looking through them, I realized I have some pretty clear formulas I tend to reach for—especially when life is hectic and I don’t want to spend 20 minutes staring at my closet. These fall work outfit formulas make putting together an outfit much faster because you’re really just filling in the blanks with pieces you already own.
So instead of simply sharing what I’ve worn, I’m breaking these looks down into five easy outfit formulas you can copy. Hopefully they’ll make getting dressed on your own busy mornings a little easier, too!
Fall Work Outfit Formula #1: Statement Pants + Simple Top
When your pants are doing most of the talking, there’s no need to make the rest of the outfit complicated. A simple solid top lets an interesting print or texture take center stage and makes this one of the easiest formulas to throw together quickly.
Both of these outfits start with neutral printed pants, but they have completely different feels. The black and cream polka dot pants are fun and a little playful, so I kept things simple with a fitted black top. Of course, I couldn’t resist adding the bright pink sneakers for a pop of color! The blue and cream toile pants have a softer print, and I paired them with a navy fringe top. The texture and fringe add interest without competing with the pattern of the pants.
- The formula: statement pants + simple top + shoes that complement the vibe. If your closet has a pair of pants you love but aren’t always sure how to style, start with a solid top that picks up one of the colors in the print. It takes almost all of the guesswork out of getting dressed.

Fall Work Outfit Formula #2: White Pants + Bold Color
Who says white pants need to disappear after summer? I wear mine year-round. One of my favorite ways to make them feel right for fall is to add a richer color on top. The white keeps the outfit fresh and lets the color stand out.
For the first look, I paired wide-leg white jeans with a bright red blouse. Printed flats add a little extra personality. The second outfit feels more autumnal. I paired white jeans with a rust embroidered blouse and leopard wedges. The warmer colors instantly make the white denim feel more seasonal.
- The formula: white pants + bold top + interesting shoes. Don’t be afraid to keep wearing your white pants into fall. Deeper colors, fall textures, and seasonal shoes can easily take them beyond summer.

Fall Work Outfit Formula #3: Solid Pants + Printed Blouse
A printed blouse and solid pants might be one of the easiest fall work outfit formulas to recreate. The print adds interest without requiring much extra styling. Solid pants keep the overall look balanced and polished.
For the first outfit, I paired a pink and purple paisley blouse with brown wide-leg pants. Black Mary Janes finish the look without adding another color. The second outfit pairs a blue printed bow blouse with navy cropped pants. Cream loafers lighten things up and add some contrast.
- The formula: printed blouse + solid pants + simple shoes. Look at the colors in your blouse when choosing your pants. You can pull out one of the colors in the print or choose a neutral that works with the whole palette. Either way, the print does most of the work for you!

Fall Work Outfit Formula #4: Pull a Color From Your Print
This is one of my favorite tricks for making an outfit look more cohesive. Start with a printed piece. Then choose another item that repeats one of the colors in the print. It doesn’t have to be an exact match!
For the first look, I pulled the lavender from the floral skirt with a lavender polo sweater. Brown Mary Janes keep the focus on the colors in the outfit. For the second look, I paired a black floral embroidered top with pink striped pants. The pink flowers help tie the two pieces together, even though both have their own pattern.
- The formula: print + coordinating color + simple accessories. This trick works especially well when you want to mix pieces that may not seem like an obvious match. Repeating a color gives them a connection and makes the whole outfit feel intentional.

Fall Work Outfit Formula #5: Interesting Top + Neutral Bottom
Sometimes the easiest way to get dressed is to choose one interesting piece and keep everything else simple. It’s one of those fall work outfit formulas that works with almost anything in your closet. An interesting top doesn’t have to mean a bold print either. Texture, shape, ruffles, or other details can make even a neutral top stand out.
For the first look, I paired a burgundy floral blouse with navy balloon pants. The print and sleeve details give the outfit plenty of interest. Neutral Mary Janes keep it grounded. For the second look, I wore a cream ruffled vest with blue cropped pants. The ruffles and shape of the top make a simple color combination feel a little more special.
- The formula: interesting top + neutral pants + simple shoes. This is an especially easy one when you’re short on time. Choose the piece you want to highlight and let everything else support it.

Easy Outfit Formulas for Busy Mornings
Looking back through these outfits made me realize how often I rely on the same basic combinations. The individual pieces change, but the formulas don’t. And when mornings are hectic, having a few go-to combinations makes getting dressed so much faster.
These fall work outfit formulas aren’t rules, either. Think of them as starting points. Swap in different colors, prints, silhouettes, or shoes based on what you already have in your closet. Sometimes having a simple formula is all you need to see your clothes in a new way.
