Fall jackets are one of the best parts of getting dressed this time of year. Not only are they practical for those cooler mornings and evenings, but they can completely change the look of an outfit. And this year, some of our favorite classics are getting a fresh update. The fall jacket trends 2026 include cropped silhouettes, workwear-inspired details, feminine shapes, and unexpected fabrics and finishes. Even better, these trends are easy to incorporate into an everyday wardrobe.
I’m sharing five trending jacket styles for fall along with how I styled each one. And because personal style is all about making a trend work for you, I’ve included a Make It Your Own tip with each outfit, too!
1. The Updated Denim Jacket
A denim jacket will probably never truly go out of style, but this fall we’re seeing versions that go beyond the traditional trucker jacket. Different silhouettes, cropped lengths, subtle patterns, and feminine details give this longtime wardrobe staple a fresh feel.
My striped denim jacket is a perfect example. The pinstripes add just enough pattern while the ruffled collar softens the casual denim. I paired it with a bright pink top and white barrel-leg jeans. I love white denim in fall, and the darker jacket helps transition it into the new season. The pop of pink keeps the whole outfit feeling like me.
Make It Your Own: You don’t need a completely new take on denim to try this trend. Look for one detail that makes your jacket interesting—a different wash, collar, shape, pattern, or cropped hem. And if you already have a classic denim jacket you love, keep wearing it! Try pairing it with a less expected bottom like trousers, a midi skirt, or colored denim to give it an update.

2. The Bomber Jacket
Bomber jackets are continuing into fall, but they aren’t limited to sporty nylon styles. This season there are plenty of more elevated versions in textured fabrics, neutrals, suede, and prints. That makes them surprisingly easy to dress up.
I leaned into that contrast by pairing my neutral bomber with a rust satin midi skirt and cream turtleneck. The relaxed shape of the jacket balances the dressier skirt, while the mix of textures adds interest to a fairly simple color palette. Leopard flats add one more subtle pattern and make the outfit feel a little more playful.
Make It Your Own: Try your bomber with something you wouldn’t normally consider “sporty.” A satin or pleated skirt, dress, tailored trousers, or even a lace top creates that high-low mix. If skirts aren’t your thing, wear one with wide-leg pants and a fitted top for the same balance of proportions.

3. The Feminine Statement Jacket
Make It Your Own: If dramatic sleeves aren’t for you, look for another feminine detail you love. A ruffled collar, peplum hem, tie waist, interesting buttons, or softly structured shape can have the same effect. Keep the rest of your outfit simpler and let the jacket be the focal point.

4. The Cropped Trench Jacket
Make It Your Own: Treat a cropped trench almost like you would a blazer. Throw it over jeans and a tee, trousers for work, or a simple dress. If you’re trying a shorter jacket with wide-leg pants, a fitted or tucked-in top underneath can help define your waist and balance the proportions.

5. The Barn Jacket
The barn jacket has become one of the biggest outerwear trends over the past few seasons, and it’s sticking around for fall. It’s easy to see why. The relaxed workwear-inspired shape is practical, comfortable, and works beautifully with all of the earthy colors and textures we naturally gravitate toward this time of year.
My olive version has a contrasting brown collar that gives it that classic barn-jacket look. Since the jacket already has plenty of detail, I kept this outfit casual with a white tee, cuffed dark-wash jeans, and brown sneakers. It’s the kind of outfit you can throw on for errands, a soccer game, pumpkin picking, or just about any casual fall weekend.
Make It Your Own: Olive and brown are classics, but don’t feel like your barn jacket has to look exactly like mine. Try tan, navy, burgundy, denim, or even a print. You can also play against its rugged feel by wearing it over a feminine dress or skirt. Or keep it casual with jeans, leggings, and sneakers—the whole point is to make the trend fit your lifestyle.

Fall Jacket Trends You Can Actually Wear
One thing I love about the fall jacket trends 2026 is that none of them feel too far removed from pieces we’ve worn before. Denim jackets, bombers, trenches, and utility jackets aren’t new. It’s the updated proportions, fabrics, colors, and details that make them feel fresh again.
And you definitely don’t need all five! Take inspiration from the trends that work with your personal style and what you already have in your closet. Sometimes simply changing what you pair with an older jacket is enough to make it feel new again. Whether you’re drawn to the casual barn jacket, feminine details, or a cropped take on a classic, there are plenty of ways to make this fall’s jacket trends your own.
One Bag, Two Ways
You may have noticed the bag in each of these outfits—or maybe you didn’t realize it was the same one! I carried the Daneault Small Robbie Reversible Purse in Mocha/Navy with all five looks, simply reversing it depending on which color worked best with my outfit. I love that you essentially get two bags in one without having to switch everything from purse to purse. The compact size is just right for my essentials, and the leather feels incredibly high quality. It reverses surprisingly easily, too, which makes the feature something I would actually use rather than just a fun idea in theory. The adjustable crossbody strap is another plus for everyday wear.
For me, the versatility is what really makes this bag stand out. Navy worked beautifully with some of the cooler colors in these outfits, while the mocha side complemented all of those warm fall browns, rusts, and neutrals. One quality bag that can change along with your outfit feels like such a smart addition to a fall wardrobe.
