Balloon pants (previously called harem pants) are such a fun silhouette for fall. They’re comfortable and versatile, but they can also look surprisingly polished—possibly even more so than barrel-leg jeans. I also find the shape really flattering. The extra volume through the leg contrasts with the cinched waist and ankles, helping to create the illusion of a more defined waist and an hourglass shape.
I have two pairs, but my dark denim pair is especially easy to wear this time of year. If you love the look but are stumped on how to style them—or specifically what shoes to wear with balloon pants—you actually have plenty of options! Because the pants taper at the ankle, your shoes are completely visible and can really change the overall feel of the outfit. From sneakers and loafers to heels and boots, here are six ways I style mine for everything from casual days to dressier occasions.
Sneakers With Balloon Pants
Sneakers are probably the easiest place to start when deciding which shoes to wear with balloon pants. Since the pants already have plenty of volume, I like a sneaker that doesn’t add too much extra bulk at the bottom. For this outfit, I paired my dark denim balloon pants with neutral sneakers and a striped polo sweater for a casual, slightly sporty look. The shorter length of the pants puts the sneakers completely on display, while the relaxed sweater complements the exaggerated shape without making the outfit feel overwhelming. It’s an easy combination for errands, weekends, or any casual day when you still want your outfit to feel intentional.
- Make it your own: Try a fitted tee, rugby shirt, cropped cardigan, or half-zip instead of a sweater. You can also swap neutral sneakers for a colorful pair to make the shoes the statement.

Loafers With Balloon Pants
Loafers give balloon pants a more polished, preppy feel while still being comfortable enough for everyday wear. I paired my dark denim balloon pants with black loafers, a striped button-down, and a sweater vest. Since the pants stop at the ankle, the loafers are fully visible and help ground the fuller silhouette. I also like how the more structured pieces on top balance the playful shape of the pants. This would be an easy outfit for work, lunch, or anywhere you want to look put together without feeling overdressed.
- Make it your own: Swap the sweater vest for a crewneck sweater or cardigan, or try a solid button-down instead of stripes. A burgundy or brown loafer would also be a great way to bring in more fall color.

Ballet Flats With Balloon Pants
Ballet flats are another easy choice because their slim profile contrasts nicely with the volume of balloon pants. For this look, I paired mine with a gray embellished sweater and simple black flats. The fitted ankle of the pants leaves the entire shoe visible, while the delicate flats keep the bottom half of the outfit from feeling too heavy. I especially like this combination when I want something comfortable and feminine that still feels current.
- Make it your own: Try a fitted cardigan, colorful sweater, or blouse on top. You could also choose metallic, animal-print, or embellished ballet flats to add a little more interest.

Mary Janes With Balloon Pants
Mary Janes are a fun way to lean into the more playful side of balloon pants. I chose bright red Mary Janes and paired them with a leopard-print blouse, letting the shoes add another bold element to the outfit. Because balloon pants taper at the ankle, statement shoes don’t get lost underneath all that denim. Instead, they’re part of the outfit! I love the mix of the exaggerated pants, animal print, and pop of red for something a little unexpected.
- Make it your own: If leopard and red feel like too much, pair your Mary Janes with a solid sweater or blouse and let the shoes provide the pop of color. Black Mary Janes would create a more subtle version of this look.

Ankle Boots With Balloon Pants
Yes, you can absolutely wear ankle boots with balloon pants! The key for me is choosing a boot with a slimmer shaft that can slip underneath the pant leg rather than stopping awkwardly below it. I paired pointed black ankle boots with my balloon jeans, a black turtleneck, and a statement jacket. The pants fall over the top of the boots so there’s no gap of skin, while the pointed toe peeking out helps visually elongate the leg. It’s an easy way to keep wearing this silhouette as the weather gets colder.
- Make it your own: Look for a fitted boot shaft that disappears underneath the hem of your pants. A pointed or almond toe works especially well, and you could easily try brown, burgundy, or another fall neutral instead of black.

Pointed-Toe Heels With Balloon Pants
If you want to dress up balloon pants, a pointed-toe heel is one of my favorite options. I paired mine with black heels, a simple top, and a blazer, and suddenly the same denim pants feel much more polished. The pointed toe helps visually extend the leg beyond the rounded silhouette of the pants, while the heel adds a little height. This combination is proof that balloon pants don’t have to be reserved for casual outfits—they can easily work for dinner, date night, or even a more creative workplace.
- Make it your own: Add a silky blouse or fitted sweater for a dressier look, or keep things simple with a tee and blazer. A kitten heel would give you the same polished effect with a little less height.

Balloon pants may have a statement-making shape, but they’re surprisingly versatile once you start experimenting with them. From casual sneakers and classic loafers to feminine flats, ankle boots, and heels, there are plenty of shoes to wear with balloon pants depending on the occasion. I especially love how the cinched ankle puts your footwear on display and gives you another opportunity to add personality to your outfit.
