My 5 Closet Workhorses

As I have been working my closet and focusing remixing, buying versatile pieces, and rethinking how to pair items together, I have come to realize I have a few favorites. I hesitate to call them basics, although some may be. Mostly they are extremely versatile and wearable pieces. I reach for them time and time again and constantly am inspired with how to change them up and wear them different ways. I decided to share what I find to be my top 5 wardrobe workhorses. I wish I had these pieces in my closet years ago! Hopefully you can learn from my mistakes and add them to your closet if you haven't already!

1. Chambray
This should be obvious. I can't go into how many ways you can wear this amazing top. Seriously it can do no wrong. I have seen so many remixing pieces featuring chambray there is certainly no lack of ways to wear it. I've worn mine here, here, herehere, here, here, and here (Whew! See what I mean about a workhorse?!)

2. Skinny Jeans
I love a good skinny jean. If I had to pick one, I would go with a dark rinse. They look less casual and can be dressed up or down more easily. Skinny jeans can be worn with almost any kind of shoe and all of mine have some stretch so they are very comfortable to wear! I even cuff mine in the spring and summer to make them more versatile as the weather gets warmer. Here are a few of my looks with skinny jeans: here, here, here, here, here, and here.

3. Cognac Boots
Of all my footwear these are worn, by far, the most. I made sure I got a pair with a classic style and good quality leather so I know they will last for a while. Cognac really goes well with all colors and you can wear boots with skirts, dresses, or those skinny jeans! See how I've worn mine here, here, here, here, and here.

4. Striped Dress
I totally scored with my striped dress. It was $12 when I bought it, but I have worn it so many different ways, I probably would have paid a lot more! A black and white striped dress is perfect for pattern mixing, goes with any color you can think of, and you can layer under or over it. Have I convinced you yet? Check out my striped dress styled here, here, here, here, and here.

5. Beige Cardigan
If I had to choose one cardigan to own, it would be my beige cardigan. Beige is the perfect neutral color. I chose a boyfriend style. I really like the length and weight of mine. It is a perfect layer over anything for a little extra warmth. Worn here, herehere, and here.

What didn't make the list? I did debate adding my burgundy pants, puffer vest, and long sleeve tissue tees (really light weight tees perfect for wearing underneath anything), but 5 is such a nicer number than 8 and I couldn't think of 2 more to make it 10!

  1. I so totally agree! The only one I don't have is a striped dress, though I've tried to find one and haven't had luck with something that flatters me yet.

  2. Totally agree with your picks. I don't own Cognac Boots but own brown boots that I wear with a lot of things. Also don't own a stripe dress but have a stripe shirt. I order a new Chambray but got an e-mail saying they no longer have the one I wanted. So I have re order a different one.

  4. I have a pair of black jeggings that I wear all the time for weekend and evening outfits. They've sort of taken over for my black skinny jeans since they have a similar look but are super comfy. I also would include a work appropriate LBD. I have a ponte knit black dress from Lands End that I'm pretty sure gets worn every week. It's definitely my go to piece for work but will also easily be able to be worn pretty casually :)

  6. My chambray shirts and black skinnies are my favorites to grab from my closet, they are so versatile!

  7. I agree, these are must haves. I have all of these too. I'd swap my Black Cardigan for the Beige one since I tend to wear it more. The last paragraph of your post made me laugh. 5 is better than 8 - rounded up. =)

  8. I'm lucky that my work is so casual, but if I ever have to work in a dressier environment, a black dress would definitely be one I wear a ton! They are so versatile!

  9. Hmm, I guess I am doing something right as I have most of these pieces in my closet!
Thanks for the reminder...I have to keep this in mind when I get stumped on what to wear.

  10. Totally agree! I don't have a good striped dress, but I do have a chambray dress that I wear a ton! I have quite the collection of cardigans and they all get quite the work out! Visiting from WIWW!

  11. Yes, yes, yes, and yes! I completely agree with all of these! I always laugh whenever I put on my chambray - somehow it goes with literally everything?! I wear a white cardigan a lot (I don't have a beige one), but basically the same thing!

  12. Oh, this is an awesome post and an awesome post idea. Thank you! I just may do something on the same idea but I would have my sparkle jeans be my pants in it. Or possibly my $5 Guess Skinnies. hahahahaha. Yes, so much can be done with these items. Marvelous concept. Thanks for your warm and genuine comments on my ensemble on Monday's post. I am slow getting out to y'all. forgive? ♥

  14. Yeah, I agree with all of these! I actually have 2 options in most of these, because I wear them so frequently!

  15. Except for the beige cardigan, these are my workhorses too. Also, you could totally wear these together for a cute outfit, either with the dress or jeans, I mean :)

  16. I totally agree Laura! I only have a beige boyfriend cardi and I need to invest in a regular one. Hopefully I can find one during end of the season sales! Susan

  18. I have had a hard time finding a skinny jeans that truly fits well, but I do love them. For me, I'd go with a blazer denim jacket over a cardigan--that's one article of clothing I've never gotten the hang of wearing.

  19. I wear the heck out of all of these pieces too! I don't have a striped dress but do have enough striped shirts to outfit a small army. Great pieces!

  20. I actually had to replace my chambray shirt this fall because I had worn the one I had out. LOL

  21. Jeans-you and me both! And probably the rest of womankind. But if you find the right pair-Bingo! The stars are aligned and it's amazing! ;) I just like cardigans because they are easier to move in and wash than blazers. I still love blazers though!

  22. Working with kids and having one, beige is just my choice because it hides stains better! ;)

  23. I can see why you call these workhorses--you've styled them so many cute ways! I think next fall/winter I will invest in a nice pair of cognac boots like yours. I have a pair, but they're not as versatile as I would prefer. Cognac does indeed go with everything!

  24. These are such classic pieces- love all of it! I have a chambray but it doesn't get worn as much as I like- will have to take a cue from your outfits!

  25. I have all of these pieces as well, and I agree - they are great workhorses! I just recently got a new chambray shirt and haven't worn it yet, which is kind of surprising. I do tend to like chambray better for spring/summer/fall, though...maybe that's the case. I need a new pair of cognac boots as well - I have worn mine so much that they're starting to wear out!
