Today I am co-hosting with the lovely Renae of Simple Sequins for her Fashion Item Friday. She is such a kind and thoughtful person and has fabulous style. I am constantly jealous of all the amazing deals she finds on clothes! So make sure you hop on over and link up!
I kept seeing this skirt when I would lay out my clothes and thinking I need to wear it again (worn last here). This time I chose softer colors and really like it with the blue. When I initially purchased this, it didn't really fill any closet holes and I could only think of a few pairings (I could think of enough that there was no question, but to buy it though!). Recently though, I am seeing more and more possibilities in my closet. And not just with this skirt, with everything. I think it is that my mindset is changing. Instead of buying outfits as I would before, I think about how pieces fit into my wardrobe and can be remixed. How do you buy clothes? Outfits or pieces? Do you stick to filling your closet holes or buy things on a whim?

Don't forget to come back Wednesday and link up your Winter Must Have outfit!

  1. It's funny how things happen like that. I used to just buy clothes because "ooh this is cute and cheap" but didn't really think ahead about how to wear it. Now that's not the case at all! I love how your skirt looks with the shades of blue.

  4. That skirt is gorgeous! I tend to be really careful about what I buy these days. I used to be a lot more impulsive before I blogged but now I measure things carefully and ask if I really need them. Each season I take an inventory of what I have and what I need to replace. Then I try to add in a few inexpensive trendy pieces to freshen up my basics.

  7. I love this skirt! I'm trying to be better when I shop about thinking how I will be able to wear an item several ways. I don't have a rule, but I'm just trying to foster that mindset.

  8. that's a gorgeous skirt; i love it with the denim shirt. i thrift so much that i often grab whatever i like without thinking first about how it will fit into the rest of my wardrobe, but i am trying to get better at that. i bet this skirt would look amazing with a mint green blouse!

  10. I think I am more careful about what I buy, buy I still make some impulse buys to an extent. I still make sure an item will work with what I already have, but I don't always buy strictly from a list.

  11. With certain items I try to think ahead and what features I want, although with trendy items I am not as picky.

  13. I agree! When I see something I like that isn't on my closet wish list, I try to make sure it works with my wardrobe, too!

  14. That's a great suggestion! I like to thrift, too but I've been really trying not to buy just to buy (which is hard because there are so many good deals to be had)!

  16. this is such a great combo! I am still on my shopping ban and I am in the process of trying to create a budget plan for clothing. Right now I am making lists of things I love. You find the best things at your Goodwill!! Susan

  17. OK so a budget question. Do you have your own spending money allowance? How do you keep track and keep each other in check? How did you set your budget? I am working on one now(: Thanks! Susan

  18. We each get $150 a month for whatever we want. We looked at our expenditures and income each month and decided it was a reasonable amount. I keep track on a spreadsheet so it's easier to do my monthly budget posts. My husband uses a journal. If we have extra it carries over to the next month and we can add whatever extra money we get for Christmas or birthdays, too. We transfer it over to a savings account we created so we don't accidentally spend it on miscellaneous things if it's in our general checking account. We figure out what we need to transfer back at the end of the month before we pay the credit card bill. Hope that helps!

  19. I totally used to be an "outfit" buyer! I had certain pieces that only got worn with other certain pieces. In the past several years, however, I've really turned into a "piece" buyer. That being said, though, whenever I go shopping, I try to create at least 5 different/unique outfits involving that particular piece so that I avoid buying items that will only get worn a handful of times. I have also been getting better and better at not buying things on a whim and instead really being nitpicky with what I add into my closet :) I really like today's outfit, by the way. That skirt is so cute and I love it with the navy blue cardigan!

  20. What a gorgeous outfit. Those Cognac Boots are so pretty & rich. As you know I have this Skirt and hadn't worn it in over a year so I need to get it out and re-create this outfit, LOL. Is your cardigan Navy or Black?

Good for you for co-hosting, also. And thanks for introducing me to another link up I had no idea about.

Looking forward to co-hosting our link up on Wednesday. =)

    P.S. I E-Mailed you.

  21. Just in the past several months I have turned into a piece buyer. I am so thankful for what I have learned through blogging. I try to think of at least 3 outfits, but make sure that doesn't just include neutrals when pairing!

  22. I used to be a sucker for a good sale, too. Lately I have been really trying to decide if I like it because of the price or the actual piece of clothing. I've really been trying to clear out what doesn't look good on me or I don't like anymore, too!

  23. It's a navy cardigan. And I hope you linked up! Renae is so sweet and it's a great link up!
