Have you ever started a new fitness routine and felt completely out of place? I remember beginning spin classes and feeling as if I stuck out like a sore thumb! So it goes to say it’s completely natural to feel a little self-conscious for a whole host of reasons when beginning a new exercise class or fitness routine. But if you tackle those aspects that could cause you to feel out-of-place head-on, odds are that you will feel more comfortable and more likely to continue that activity for the long run!
When it comes to self-care, fitness plays an important role in your overall mental and physical health. Focusing on the following four issues should help you incorporate new fitness routines into your life whether you are already in shape and trying something new or just trying to exercise more regularly.
1. Be Realistic About Your Starting Point
Comparing yourself to other people is unavoidable when starting your fitness routine. Unfortunately in today’s world, social media algorithms encourage harmful comparisons against celebs and models. In turn, it becomes very easy to grow an inferiority complex.
There’s nothing wrong with taking inspiration from real people who have achieved real results. Ultimately, though, you are only competing against yourself. Using something like a Couch to 5K challenges can work wonders. As long as you see continued progress, you have no reason to feel conscious. Remember when it comes to beginning a new fitness routine, the only way is up.

2. Wear The Right Clothes
Choosing workout attire that is both comfortable and good looking will serve you well. It can aid performance levels while seeing a better reflection in the mirror can provide added motivation. However, there is another incentive for paying extra attention to your clothing choices. Self-consciousness.
In an ideal world, you’d be able to stay fit without even thinking about your clothes. In reality, you will feel eyes looking at you if the choices feel frumpy or don’t fit well. Choose items that are flattering, but most importantly comfortable like black scrunch leggings that are not transparent, even when squatting, will give you an extra source of comfort. In turn, you can workout with extra confidence.
The right footwear is another crucial feature as it will enhance your posture. There is a reason why footwear is made specifically for different types of exercise uses. They lend support and cushion exactly where it is needed.

3. Be Around Other Beginners
Once again, avoiding the inferiority complex is essential for any new fitness enthusiast. So pay special attention to your decisions for workouts in the real world. If you suddenly put yourself in a position where you are working out with very experienced people, it can become disheartening.
With this in mind, it is a far wiser move to focus on fitness classes for beginners. You may still start behind other participants, but you won’t feel out of your depth. Better still, you can all develop together, becoming more confident as well as fitter. This will naturally lead to both immediate and long-term rewards. When you are surrounded by people that make mistakes, your own failings will feel perfectly natural (which of course, they are!).

4. Practice At Home
Whether you’ve become accustomed to home workouts in recent months or not, there is no question that they can add a lot of value. And they are a wonderful resource when you are trying out a new exercise and have some doubts about your form. Look at yourself in the mirror until you become familiar and comfortable with the routine.
You will not struggle to find online video tutorials of the exercise you are trying out either. There is so much to choose from! Use these as your learning tools until you feel comfortable trying out the exercise in the gym. Even if you do not have weights at home, simply practicing the form is useful. When you do enter the gym, have the confidence to ask for help. Many people are happy to share their knowledge.
Hopefully all of these tips help you if you are looking to add variety to your workout routine or just looking to incorporate exercise into your life!
