Each and every moment of our lives contributes to shaping who we are and how we interact with the world. While many think of life as linear, life sometimes has ups and downs and sides to sides, with a few curve balls thrown for good measure. And while the late, great comedian Bill Hicks once described life as “Just a ride,” it can become all too serious at any moment.
Unforeseen events such as losing a job can put a tremendous financial strain on a family. Medical diagnoses can profoundly change your way of life. And birth or death, while both being the most natural aspects of life, are complete paradoxes. But we can endure. With the proper guidance and support, you can get through anything, no matter how much you think you can’t.
Acute and Severe Medical Issues
I pray you are the type of person who has never experienced medical problems your life. But unfortunately that can all change. Medical issues can range from relatively minor to significant, but each can impact your life. This usually depends on the severity of an illness in conjunction with treating such a condition.
For example, you could be one of the 48 million Americans diagnosed with hearing loss, yet managed effectively; this need not be an issue. Hearing aids have come such a long way since their invention. There are many different kinds for different types of hearing loss and are incredibly effective at helping. An audiologist will fit a device and show you how to use hearing aid controls properly. In addition, some more advanced machines can be paired with a smartphone for manipulation via an app.

The Unexpected Loss of a Loved One
The call everyone dreads; being informed that a loved one has passed away. No one wants that call, yet after birth, death is the most natural part of life. It will happen to us all. However, the experience of grief because of an unexpected, sudden loss rather than natural loss can be devastating to family members. Parents who lose a child, a husband that loses a wife or children losing a parent, no one should suffer this kind of sadness.
It is said that everyone grieves in their own way, and this is most definitely true. But if you are having a tough time, there are some things you can do to help with the pain:
- Talking to those close to you will earn support through this difficult time.
- Try to understand that being emotional is normal. Let yourself truly feel those emotions as they come.
- Accept that loss has occurred and get your life back on track while remembering your loved one as you live your life.

The Birth of a Child
The birth of a child is a joyful and wondrous experience. You have brought new life into the world, and every day is a privilege to nurture and watch them grow. But an additional family member also means that significant changes are about to happen in your life, and you need to do all that you can to accommodate them.
First of all, you can say goodbye to sleep. Haha! Your life is no longer your own, as every waking minute is now dedicated to feeding, cleaning, and playing with your baby. As joyful as a baby is, though, too much baby time can be stressful. You are constantly giving of yourself so you need that time to regenerate. Share the responsibility equally between yourself and your partner, and don’t forget your “Me Time.” Many parents find that talking to other parents is an excellent coping mechanism as it allows you to share experiences and tips. It certainly lets you know you aren’t alone!
Hopefully these tips help you cope when sudden life changes come your way!
