Wondering how to style a striped sweater without always falling back on jeans? Bold, colorful stripes are trending, but all that color can make them seem tricky to style. I actually think the opposite is true! A striped sweater gives you a ready-made color palette, making it an easy way to experiment with color.
Of course, jeans and neutrals always work, but we can go further. Today I’m styling three bold striped sweaters two ways each, using coordinating, complementary, and contrasting colors. I’m also carrying my cream Teddy Blake Amelia bag with every look. It’s the perfect neutral to balance all that color—and proof that cream can work beautifully for fall.
Multicolor Stripes + Pink
The easiest place to start is by pulling a color directly from your stripes. This sweater has olive, pink, yellow, gray, navy, and light blue, so I paired it with pink wide-leg pants. Repeating the pink creates a colorful outfit that still feels cohesive and intentional.

Multicolor Stripes + Chocolate Brown
For the second outfit, I went outside the sweater’s color palette with chocolate brown shorts and Mary Jane flats. When deciding how to style a striped sweater, don’t feel limited to the colors within the stripes! A rich neutral like chocolate brown grounds the brighter colors and gives them a more autumnal feel without automatically reaching for jeans or black.
The cream Teddy Blake bag works with both approaches. It’s neutral enough not to compete with the stripes, but lighter and a little more unexpected than a traditional brown or black fall bag.
- Make It Your Own: Start by choosing one color from your striped sweater and repeating it on the bottom. Once you’re comfortable with that, try a neutral or contrasting color that isn’t in the sweater. You may be surprised by how many combinations work!

Pink & Red Stripes + Burgundy
For this look, I stayed within the same color family by pairing the pink and red sweater with a burgundy skirt. Burgundy feels like a natural extension of the red stripes, creating a tonal combination without trying to match the colors exactly. It’s also an easy way to make bright pink feel a little richer for fall.

Pink & Red Stripes + Dark Green
Next, I went in the opposite direction with dark green wool trousers. Green is complementary to red, so the contrast makes both colors stand out. Choosing a deep green rather than a brighter shade keeps the combination feeling sophisticated and decidedly fall—not Christmas!
I added leopard flats as another neutral and, of course, the cream bag. Even with several colors and a print in the mix, the outfit still feels cohesive because each piece has a purpose.
- Make It Your Own: Look at the dominant color in your striped sweater and consider its opposite on the color wheel. You don’t have to choose the brightest version—a deeper or more muted shade can make complementary colors much easier to wear.

Blue & Brown Stripes + Denim
Jeans may be the easy choice when deciding how to style a striped sweater, but easy isn’t a bad thing! The blue in this sweater makes dark-wash denim a natural coordinating option, while the warm brown stripes add enough contrast to make the combination more interesting than a basic sweater-and-jeans outfit.
The Teddy Blake bag lightens up the darker shades and gives the outfit a polished finish. This is probably the simplest of my six looks and a great reminder that playing with color doesn’t have to mean wearing it head to toe.

Blue & Brown Stripes + Rust
For a bolder option, I swapped the denim for rust corduroy pants. Blue and orange are complementary colors, and rust gives you a softer, more wearable version of that combination. It also works beautifully with the brown in the sweater, so there are several colors helping to connect this outfit.
- Make It Your Own: If a true complementary color feels too bold, try a variation of it. Think rust instead of orange, burgundy instead of red, or olive instead of bright green. You’ll still get that interesting contrast in a much more wearable way.

How to Wear a Cream Handbag for Fall
I tend to think of cream as a year-round neutral, and my Teddy Blake Amelia Stampato 15 is a perfect example. Instead of putting lighter accessories away once summer ends, try pairing them with richer seasonal shades. I love how this cream bag looks against burgundy, forest green, chocolate brown, rust, and dark denim. Those deeper colors actually make the cream stand out even more.
The Amelia also combines two things I look for in a bag: a current silhouette and long-term versatility. The larger, relaxed shape feels very on-trend right now, while the cream pebbled leather and classic details keep it from feeling like something I’ll only carry for one season. It’s roomy enough to be a practical everyday bag, and the neutral color worked with every one of these very different outfits.
With so much color happening in the sweaters, using the same cream bag throughout also helped ground each look. It’s a good reminder that a neutral accessory doesn’t always have to be black or brown—especially in fall.
Easy Ways to Style Bold Striped Sweaters
Once you start looking at the colors within a striped sweater as a built-in palette, styling it becomes a lot less intimidating. You can pull out one of the stripe colors, stay within the same color family, reach for a complementary shade, or ground everything with a neutral.
I hope these six outfits give you a few new ideas for how to style a striped sweater beyond simply adding jeans. Start with the combinations that feel comfortable, then experiment from there. Sometimes one unexpected color pairing is all it takes to make an old outfit formula feel completely new.
