It's taken me a very long time to learn to love my hair. Really, it's true! When I was growing up I had thick, wavy hair. It made it harder to learn how to do various hairstyles that my friends had. When I attempted to get popular haircuts, they never looked quite right because of the waves or the amount of hair I had. In high school my hair started to get more waves and even some curls. The midwest humidity was my enemy. All I wanted was hair that looked like my friends'. Even in college once I discovered the miracle of straighteners, when it rained or throughout summer, my hair never did what I wanted. Over the last 10 years I've slowly learned how to work with my hair and not always against it, especially after having children when my hair became quite a bit curlier! My oldest daughter already has some waves in her hair and I'll be happy to pass on what I have learned to her so she will have many years of good hair days to look forward to! Today I'm sharing some tips on haircare to ensure many more good hair days in the future!

2. Wash Less

I used to wash my hair everyday. It took forever every morning and my hair was becoming so dry. I was able to begin stretching it out to every other day and now I try to only wash twice a week. By washing less not only are you saving time, you are saving your hair! If you wash too often you are stripping the hair of its natural oils that help it stay moisturized and give it shine. This is especially important if you have longer, thicker hair. It is helpful to use dry shampoo, putting your hair up in a bun or pony tail or braid on day 3 or 4 can really help extend your wash and avoid the 'unwashed' look.

3. Work with the Weather

Especially with wavy or curly hair, it's so important not to fight the humidity! It's absolutely pointless for someone with hair like mine to straighten their hair at any point during a Midwest summer. Haha! But in all seriousness think about a style you can do in a high humidity and a low humidity environment. For me that means during the summer or when it is rainy, I diffuse my hair and wear it curly. When it is drier in the winter, I straighten my hair and then can go 3-4 days without any extra hair styling. 

4. Put Your Hair to Sleep at Night 

Something I've learned to help extend your style and take care of your hair is to not neglect it at night! If you haven't switched already, use a silk pillowcase on your pillow at night. Silk can not only help your hair maintain moisture, reduce frizz and breakage, but it also reduces night sweating which can contribute to greasy looking hair. And it is good for your skin, too! Another tip, especially if you have longer hair is to 'pineapple' your hair. Use a silk scrunchie to pile up your hair on top of your head in a loose ponytail or bun. If you have curly hair, it helps extend your curls by helping them not become tangled or flattened at night. If you have straight hair it helps maintain volume and protect any curls or waves you added with heat styling. A silk scrunchie in particular helps reduce frizz and doesn't leave any creases. I rarely have to touch up my hair the next day when I pull it up at night!

5. Use a Good Quality Brush

How many brushes do you have? I have at least 4. And they are all for different purposes. I have a natural boar bristle round brush and flat paddle brush for drying my hair and other brushes for when my hair is wet or when I want it smooth when I pull it up. 6. Pay Attention to Your Water Quality 

If you live in an area with hard water, it's so important to use soft water when washing your hair. If you don't have a whole-house water softener, you can buy mini water softeners that fit on your shower head so at least you have soft water when you shower.

7. Deep Condition & Heat Protect 

My hair tends to be dry so I actually use a deep conditioner every time I wash, but if your hair is on the thinner side or tends to be more oily, take that into account when deciding how often to deep condition your hair.
