Things to Consider as Your Relatives Age

Everyone gets older with time. It’s an inevitable part of life, but the older you get, the more support you may need. That is why it is essential for you to take this into account when saving for retirement, but also when you may be making decisions for your parents or grandparents as they age.

If they are staying in their own home, your first priority is to ensure that the inside of the home is safe and secure. Consider adding a chair lift on the stairs, and make sure there isn’t even the slightest possibility to slip on something. If a better option is moving your relative into an assisted care facility it is critical for older people to take care of their mental and physical health at all times. More than 2 million people in America over the age of 65 suffer from some form of depression so it is something we need to be aware of. 

Ensuring the inside of their home is safe and secure
Is the interior of your home properly secured and safe to avoid any slips and falls? The majority of falls occur within the home. Some of the biggest trip hazards are on throw rugs and electrical cords. It is also important for areas like the stairs and in the bathroom. When you get out of the shower, is there a mat placed on the floor that will keep you protected? Think about installing grab bars in the bath as well as that is a location for a lot of falls. Accidents can happen no matter your age, but they unfortunately even more likely to occur the older you become. An ounce prevention is worth a pound of cure! 

Considering elderly care homes
If you cannot care of your family member yourself, then you should also seriously consider assisted care facilities. There will always be a caretaker that looks after your loved one’s needs no matter what time of day it is. Given that there will be other elderly individuals in this care home as well, it can also act as a great social setting. Often times there are activities planned throughout the days that help encourage social connections and mental stimulation. 

Taking care of their mental and physical health
 Looking after a senior's mental and physical health is different than someone younger. Your diet is incredibly important to your health, however as you age it’s more critical than ever before. Make sure you keep this in mind for your aging relatives as well. This often means decreasing consumption of processed food and eating more fiber through fruits and vegetables and lean protein like chicken, pork, or fish. 

Ensure that they are getting enough sleep and some physical activity in every single day, even if it’s simply going for a walk.

Emergency and worst-case scenarios
Emergency and worst-case scenarios are incidents where an accident occurs. Unfortunately in some situations, there may even be a problem related to elderly abuse. No matter what, you need to be prepared, and you can ensure this is the case in these situations by knowing whom to call when something along the aforementioned two scenarios occurs.

This is something that could occur even within a care-home, and no one should turn a blind eye to it. Sometimes the elderly are not able to speak up for themselves due to diseases like dementia or communication issues resulting from stroke. Other times they may be embarrassed to admit this is occurring because they aren't as capable as they once were. It is so important to be vigilant!  Moreover, you always want to ensure that you are left in capable hands when something along these lines happens.

Think of it this way, when you get older, you want someone there that will help take care of you, and so you must do the same for your elderly family members.
