You all know I am a huge fan of thredUP. I have purchased so many of my things through their site and love saving up credits by sending in bags of my unworn, unwanted clothes to get great designer finds for a steal! But they've done some amazing things beyond clothing, too. A while ago they had a teacher appreciation contest where you could nominate inspirational teachers for a chance for them to win money for their classrooms. They have given schools the opportunity to do fundraisers. And over the past year thredUP has had a #badassmom series. As a working mom and educator, these are all issues close to my heart and it has definitely made me feel good about continuing to support this store.
In thredUP's words, "#badassmoms is thredUP’s series wherein we celebrate amazing women who are defining a new norm. Women who are making modern choices, building a supportive community, and making it happen. Their stories are worth celebrating, and we want to share them with the world."

It's interesting to think about how the term badass has changed over the years. It used to mean someone completely fearless, not always in a good way. Maybe even someone you want to avoid. It was someone who is tough and intimidating. Definitely not someone who you could look up to. Now the connotation of the term has done a complete 180. Being badass has morphed into a revered status. Now it is someone who is ultra-cool, bold, and given more than a moderate amount of respect. It's a term I certainly hope I embody at times.
Honestly, I think each and everyone of us is #badass. And by that I mean an amazing, strong woman. Everyday women are expected to do it all. We must be mothers, chefs, caretakers, providers, career women, and so much more. We may not feel like it every day, but the very definition of women is to have an inner strength to rise above. And the modern term #badassmom really highlights that. A #badassmom doesn't take no for an answer, is an advocate, and who knows her dreams and works hard for them. Having confidence and being badass go hand in hand which is one of the reasons I wanted to share about thredUP's #badassmoms today. Without confidence how can you try to fulfill your goals?

What I love about thredUP's #badassmoms is that you can really relate to them and be inspired in your own life. Maybe it's Kristen Philipkoski's eclectic 70's style or her path to motherhood through fostering you relate to. Or maybe it's company-owner Ashley Knies's vegan lifestyle you identify with. Perhaps you are feeling single-mom of teens Maya Webb. Or musician mommy Miwa Gemini. Karina Linch tackles the feat of being a high power working mom of 3. It might be that you feel in line with former-educator-turned-digital-entrepreneur Brandi Riley. You may admire Tara Pucci whose incredible story really moved me. Or maybe you relate most to Megan Alexander, working to shatter the stereotypes (and glass ceiling) of women in sports. In the end, it doesn't matter who you relate to or you find #badassmoms in your own life to look up to.
The point all of this is to help you feel empowered and confident to follow your dreams and believe in yourself. Thank you thredUP for encouraging women everywhere to live up to our true potentials!

This week Sheelah from Sheelah Writes is co-hosting and I am thrilled! She is the perfect example of a #badassmom and a stylish one at that. I admire Sheelah for her fashion sense and how she pushes the boundaries of trends. Her posts are incredibly well written almost philosophical pieces and really make you think about current issues and society in general. If you aren't following her, you should be!

ReplyDeleteLooks like we had the same idea this week. :) I had no idea about thred up doing such wonderful things. I need you thrifters to take me aside and teach me your ways. I have tried and tried to find thrifted items, even at thred up, and just never have any luck.

#badassmoms.....I love it.
ReplyDeleteWell those certainly are badass boots!
ReplyDeleteI love the fact that they've supported teachers in the past - I'm a teacher and so was my Mum. Shame that they chose to limit their hashtag to be mom related one; not all women are Mums and that feels somewhat exclusive but just my two pence worth!

I absolutely love this Laura - not only the pretty polished outfit, but also the message behind it. Have you read the book You are a Badass by Jen Sincero? Gina gifted me with the book and I know others who are reading it, or have read it. It's all about believing in yourself and following your dreams. You may like it :)
ReplyDeleteLove those over the knee boots!

You look gorgeous! I love Thredup and I love the series they are doing! Those OTK boots are so perfect! I love how you paired them with white jeans! Edgy for Fall!

Laura, I had no idea Thredup did things like this. How cool!!! And I am so so honoured (and even more flattered) that you think I'm a badass mum. When I look in the mirror, I see someone who's more frazzled than put together. More gawky than cool. And definitely not someone confident, least of all bold. So thank you so so so much. My ego and my heart thank you XOXOXO
ReplyDeleteWell you are definitely a badass mom! I loved reading about everything thredUP does to empower women!
ReplyDeleteAnd I just love your outfit - whites with browns and greens is so pretty in fall and winter!
