Closet Inventory 2016

This is the third year I've decided to do a closet inventory. You can find 2014 here, and 2015 here. I've never been on a mission to decrease or increase my closet, but it is certainly interesting to see how things change.

As with the last times, I did not count athletic clothing, lounge wear, pajamas, or under garments. I also didn't get into my accessories. Without further adieu...

tanks/sleeveless: 19 12 13
short sleeve: 20 20 19
3/4 sleeve: 13 6 5
long sleeve: 14 20 22
button up: 20 13 12

cardigans: 16 15 11
TOTAL: 132 119 119

jeans: 9 8 7
colored jeans/skinny cords: 8 10 10

sweater: 3 3 3
sheath: 3 3 7
casual: 15 16 15
TOTAL: 26 28 34

flats: 17 13 12
heels/wedges: 10 15 20
sandals: 5 5 4
boots/booties: 10 10 10
athletic: 2 1 1
TOTAL: 45 44 47

vests: 9 9 11
heavy coats: 4 3 2
light coats: 6 6 5

TOTAL ITEMS: 280 286 289

I like to look at trends like the consistent decrease in 3/4 sleeve tops, heavy coats, dress pants, and flats. It's interesting to figure out why that is and then take that information when shopping in the future. For example, 3/4 sleeve tops just aren't as practical for me. It's either too cold and I want a full sleeve, or too warm and I'd prefer a tank or short sleeve top. I also don't think they layer as well. So I will most likely avoid them in the future. Since I have a casual lifestyle, dress pants are not something I need more of. And for flats and heavy coats, I've been able to pair down to items I really use more.

I also noticed dresses, long sleeve tops, sweaters, skirts, and heels increased in number. As someone who is almost always cold and lives in the midwest, more long sleeve tops and sweaters is no surprise to me. I love to purchase skirts and have a hard time getting rid of them. In my defense, they are all so different with fits, colors, lengths, and prints! I think my increase in dresses and heels is a combination of collaborations (dresses are easier pick), DSW coupons, and a desire for more date nights with my fabulous husband! If only there was more time!

I think I will continue to try my one-in-one-out philosophy and maybe even get rid of a few additional items. Over the years I feel my closet just gets more and more versatile so while the number doesn't change much, there seems to be so many more options now.

Have you ever done a closet inventory? How does yours compare?

  1. This was a fascinating read, and something i need to do in my own closet.

  2. I started to do a closet inventory a few years ago, I think when I saw your first one, but never finished. I really should do this - it will help me decide what I need for fall.

  3. I feel like I'm constantly reassessing my closet. About a year or two ago (can't recall exactly when), I got really interested in the whole capsule wardrobe thing. I'm not extreme with it, like telling myself I can only have 30 items or anything like that. I just try to make sure the majority of what I purchase is mix and matchable. I really think out my purchases, and try to not have an excess amount of clothing for my lifestyle. As someone who loves fashion this can be REALLY hard! I still struggle with impulse purchasing from time to time, but all in all I'm happy with where I'm at (b/c where I came from was having serious shopping issues/addiction!)

  4. This is so interesting! It's nice that you have done it the past couple years and have the numbers to compare.

  5. I need to do this- what a cool way to take stock of what you have, what you need, and what you should stop buying!

  6. This is awesome! I need to consider doing this myself. I like the idea of one in, one out. Gonna try that!

  7. I really should do this with my closet. I am with you on 3/4 sleeves - I do not keep or buy them for the same reason.

  8. Wow, I have to admit I am impressed.
I've done partial inventories. In 2015 I counted shoes, scarves, sunglasses.
Back then I had 75 pairs of shoes, now I probably have 70 or less (Yay!)
Had 35 scarves, probably have a few more now. Counted 68 total in cardigans/blazers and such.
Also 51 sleeveless tops. Then I stopped counting :)
I think its a great idea to keep track although sometimes it can be mind boggling !

  9. This is a great idea. I like 3/4 length sleeve better than long sleeves. I think they fit me better.

  10. I haven't done a clothes inventory. I have down a shoe one before. It also nice to do them to see how you change.

  11. I like its tick to the one in, one out philosophy. I actually think I've been getting rid of more lately than I've been putting in. If I'm not wearing it, it needs to find a new home!

  12. How interesting Laura---I've never done an inventory like this!
I try to give away a pair of shoes when I buy a pair---mainly for space realism. And then there are times I go through and purge.
It is smart to know what works for your lifestyle & what doesn't. When I was working I had a ton of dress pants and very little jeans---now it's just the opposite (although I still like my jackets/blazers)!

  13. This is a really interesting idea to help one decide the change in style preference.

  14. This is a great tip. It would stop me from overspending and hoarding everything. I may tackle day lol. Thanks for sharing this idea!

  15. Thanks for linking up to Top of the World Style. This is interesting. I should do that with my closet

  16. I have never done a closet inventory, but I think it's a fabulous idea! I need to clean out my closet again, and I think I'll do an inventory at the same time!

  17. Love this idea, have to get my closet in order and this is a lovely thing to do! Will definitely try this when I get the time! Xx

  18. I really need to do a wardrobe inventory! These posts are fascinating :) I haven't done one this year at all, but I did one last year and it was quite eye-opening. I've done a lot of clearing out since, but I've also done a lot of shopping, ha! It would be interesting to see the changes over the years.

  19. Nice post!

  20. I have never done a closet inventory before with this much detail (I guess it sort of frightens me!). But this very interesting and I like how you analyzed the trends within your wardrobe. I just have too much stuff in general. But I can't seem to let it go. At last count, I had 50 pairs of jeans. But they are various cuts, colors, distressed and not distressed, and in 3 different sizes! Because I do fluctuate that much in size. Gah! The struggle is real.

Thanks for linking up with me On the Edge of the Week. I hope you will join me again this week!

  21. What a great idea! I just did a closet clean out so this would be a good time to take stock, right? Thanks so much for linking up with Fun Fashion Friday!

  22. It looks like you keep a good consistent amount of clothes in your closet. I am so bad at purging and just keep adding.

Thank you for being a part of TBT Fashion link up and hope to see you soon!
