When to Clean Out Your Closet (and When Not to)

I am an advocate for doing frequent clean-outs of your closet. I try to subscribe to the 'one in, one out' train of thought so my closet doesn't become overwhelming. After all, we know that happens way too easily! Getting rid of what is torn, worn, or stained is important. Donating what no longer fits or what you don't like is important as well. It leaves you with less to focus on, and a completely wearable closet. But how far do you go when cleaning out your closet? Maybe too far at times?

Fashion is ever-changing, but also cyclical. Trends come and go and then come back. So if you have a very classic piece that fits you really well, you might want to consider keeping it for a while. Case in point. These jeans were a clearance find at Gap years ago and I love everything about them. The fit, wash, and length are on point. So even though I donated all my other flare jeans, these stayed. Lo and behold flare jeans are back. These are without any trendy details so I was happy to pull them out again a couple months ago. No searching the stores to find the perfect pair of flare jeans again because I already had them. So don't forget that when cleaning out your closet, there are a couple items that you might want to set to the side!

  2. I know what you mean about sometimes cleaning out your closet too much... there have been many times when I have wondered if I should've kept this or that because it's come back in style... but I've found the ones that I've actually kept are the ones I always reach for regardless of how many items I have in my wardrobe! Leopard and denim are a great combo, you look fabulous!

  6. So smart of you to keep those jeans--they're great!! I used to be a lot better about doing regular closet clean-outs and practicing the "one in one out" rule. The closet at our last house was TINY. At this house I have a lot more room, and that is kind of dangerous!

  7. I love those jeans and there are days I wish I would not have given certain things away because they are back in style! I just need a bigger closet!

  11. Closet cleanouts are hard. I have a hard time getting rid of vintage or things I've made. Those jeans were a great piece to keep.

  14. This subject is such a bone of contention with my mother and I---I'm the purger, she's the saver.
So I totally can relate to what you're saying.
What I've come to learn, is that sure---it's good to have a "white blouse" in your closet---and maybe even 2 or 3, but does one person need 10 of the same items. My mom will say, "but they are all different." And my argument is "not enough for others to recognize. All other people see is a white blouse." Of course, she still won't get rid of things----oy!!
Maybe if someone besides her daughter spoke reason?
On the other hand...it looks like I'll need to go buy a pair of flares...even if I kept them from years ago, they wouldn't fit!!!

  15. This is so true! I try to do this as well when I have stuff in my closet that is a little out of style but is still in great shape. Sometimes I do probably go a little far though when I am on cleaning sprees.

  16. I should have thought ahead like you did! I donated a whole slew of bell bottom jeans a few years ago. They would've been perfect now! These ones fit you to a T

  17. I really love these jeans on you and I would have never guessed they were old! I have a leather jacket I let go of many years back and I wish I had kept it now. I have been looking for a leopard top, the one you have on is exactly what I've been looking for! Love this outfit.

  18. Beautiful outfit! I clean my closet out a lot, getting rid of the things I just don't wear or doesn't fit. If I hadn't worn in a year I get rid of it. Love your jeans!

  19. I am a hoarder!! LOL which explains why I have pieces from college...yes college. I just keep thinking that since I can still wear things passed down from my mom, I can pass them down to Miss K. :) Join my weekly Weekend Wear Linkup and share your style and stories. Have a great weekend!

  22. Ha this post so reminded me of all the things I have gotten rid of at goodwill and then regretted it! I get clean it out crazy ...trying to stop doing that! You look darling, I love leopard anything!

  23. Regretting some of the things I've donated is what makes it so hard for me to clean out my wardrobe, haha! Those flare jeans are great on you. I did the same and kept a pair of flared jeans too! It's nice wearing them again.

  24. Yes I'm guilty of getting carried away and getting rid of too many things. My Gap "Long & Lean" flares are always on my save list though! Terrific look, Laura. Thanks so much for sharing with Fun Fashion Friday!

  26. I agree that you do need to purge a closet every once in awhile to get rid things that are no longer loved.
