I was the girl who was scared of colored jeans just a few years ago. Now I am branching out into patterned bottoms and loving their surprising versatility. When you are on a budget, often times you don’t want to dive head first into a trend. I typically buy one item to test the waters and see if it’s worth investing in more. But I want to make sure that first item I buy can be worn multiple ways. For patterned bottoms, this was especially true. Here are a few tips I’ve learned to keep in mind when purchasing patterned bottoms to make sure you get the most bang for your buck.
1. Keep colors in mind.
If you are planning on buying your first pair of patterned bottoms, try looking for ones with neutral colors. That way they don’t seem so loud if you are nervous about patterns. Neutral colored bottoms also play well with many different colored tops. My black and white shorts have been worn with a multitude of colors! Navy/blue also works really well with many different colors.
On the flip side, if you like color, pick a pattern with lots of color in it. That way you will have more options when choosing your top. You could go for a neutral, or pick a color from the pattern to pair with your bottoms!
2. Fit is important
As with all pants, fit is key. But with patterned pants you need to decide how you would like to wear them. For example, a skinny pant leg in ankle length will allow you to wear them with sandals, boots, heels, and flats. That makes them much more versatile than joggers that typically only look good with heels.
3. What type of print is it?
Some prints are seasonal. Think plaid for fall or floral for spring and summer. If you want to get one pair of patterned pants you want to make sure they are versatile! Smaller, geometric prints are easier to wear year round.
