I was the girl who was scared of colored jeans just a few years ago. Now I am branching out into patterned bottoms and loving their surprising versatility. When you are on a budget, often times you don't want to dive head first into a trend. I typically buy one item to test the waters and see if it's worth investing in more. But I want to make sure that first item I buy can be worn multiple ways. For patterned bottoms, this was especially true. Here are a few tips I've learned to keep in mind when purchasing patterned bottoms to make sure you get the most bang for your buck.

1. Keep colors in mind.

If you are planning on buying your first pair of patterned bottoms, try looking for ones with neutral colors. That way they don't seem so loud if you are nervous about patterns. Neutral colored bottoms also play well with many different colored tops. My black and white shorts have been worn with a multitude of colors! Navy/blue also works really well with many different colors.
On the flip side, if you like color, pick a pattern with lots of color in it. That way you will have more options when choosing your top. You could go for a neutral, or pick a color from the pattern to pair with your bottoms!

2. Fit is important

As with all pants, fit is key. But with patterned pants you need to decide how you would like to wear them. For example, a skinny pant leg in ankle length will allow you to wear them with sandals, boots, heels, and flats. That makes them much more versatile than joggers that typically only look good with heels.

3. What type of print is it?

Some prints are seasonal. Think plaid for fall or floral for spring and summer. If you want to get one pair of patterned pants you want to make sure they are versatile! Smaller, geometric prints are easier to wear year round.

I have one pair of printed jeans, and nothing else. I don't wear them often really, I didn't think through or put any of your tips into action when I bought them, haha!

  10. These tips are great- you nailed it right on the head! I made the mistake of getting some joggers and they aren't as versatile as them seem- boo! Needless to say, they are listed on my Instagram sale now :-)

  11. Great tips! Agree 100% with these, I love wearing my floral pants in the spring/summer and I have some geometric work pants I can wear year-round. I need some plaid pants for fall! Yours fit you so well, they are almost more flattering than solid pants because not everyone can pull patterned pants off!

  19. I love those pants and your flats, great combo with the blush pink. Come link this pink outfit with me tomorrow. I want to invest on some more patterned pants and colored jeans. I will check out the Pixie and Harper pants from Old Navy for patterns and Rockstar Jeans for colored bottoms. I agree that a geo-print is best for all seasons. I love my geo-print pants and have worn them lots.
