Navy Gingham and Pink

I suppose I have to address the white 'dots' all over the pictures. Yes, it snowed about a week ago. Clearly nothing really stuck so at least there's that silver lining.

Anyway, I was reading GOMI a few days ago. Darn it. That site is like an accident on the highway. You can't stop reading. Just when you want to close the page another thread jumps out and it's like, "Oh, I wonder what this says!" One of the threads I read had several posts about affiliate links. Basically the commenters were saying if you can afford designer clothes, why do you need money from affiliate links?

Shirt-Target (exact, similar) | Skirt worn here and here -thredUp (similar, similar) | Tights-Walmart | Belt-ebay (similar, similar) | Necklace (similar in pink) | Shoes-TJMaxx (similar, similar)

Well I certainly do not have designer duds, but I do use affiliate links (see disclosure in sidebar). When I started adding links to similar items, it was hard to find like-items and took a lot of time. It still does take some time, but going through an affiliate site (I typically use Shopstyle) cuts down on that dramatically. As a reader of blogs, I like seeing similar items and click on links occasionally. It doesn't bother me that a blogger earns a few cents because she took the time to put an affiliate link there. And what kind of petty person would I be if I refused to click on a similar item I liked just because I didn't want someone to earn $.02? And if I don't like them why am I reading their blog anyway? It would be silly to take extra time and search google myself just to avoid it.

It is an interesting argument and while I can see both sides, I am not really doing it for the funds. If you disagree with the practice it isn't like you have to click anyway. Maybe I am just too lazy to get worked up over something like a few cents.

I am curious to know, what are your thoughts?

  1. I completely agree. Like, I would go over all the reasons why, but I'd just be saying all the things you've already said! It doesn't bother me at all, and I have affiliate links for the same reasons you do. I really like this outfit (aside from the snow haha). Pink and navy go together really well.

  2. Omg I cant believe its snowing in your picture! I'm really hoping spring comes soon for you! As for GOMI a lot of what they say can be true at times but many of their comments are to the extreme like the affiliate links. We bloggers get a very small precent from each click or purchase so what is there to be upset about it. Its either you want to see the item their wearing or not. Oh well to each its own :)

  3. Laura, first of all you look fabulous. That Gingham Shirt you have one is the exact size and color in which I also want a gingham shirt. Beautiful pairing with the hot pink skirt and white flower necklace. And I quite like the snow flurries on the photos. You also always find the best tights at Wal Mart. I never knew that about them.

GOMI is a train wreck. I have no problem with people using affiliate links. As a matter of fact I should start doing so ASAP. I have waited way too long already.

    HAPPY MONDAY!!

  4. I love the combination of pink and gingham! So pretty! I completely agree with you when it comes to affiliate links. Blogging takes a lot of time, and sometimes the majority of that is devoted to finding similar items to what you're wearing. I don't see anything wrong with bloggers earning a little money for the work and time they put into their sites!

  5. You look gorgeous--the white dots of snow actually make the pictures look even more fabulous! And I am with you--I think bloggers put a ton of time and effort into their sites and should reap the rewards--which with affiliates, tends to be small anyways! We should be cheering each other on and applauding others for doing well--not tearing each other down! Boo to that article!

  6. I can't believed it snowed again where you live. I have no problem with blogger using affiliate links. I also stay way from GOMI. Since some of the things said over there make me mad.

  7. So funny to see the juxtaposition of falling snow and green grass--something I've definitely seen in Michigan many times, but it always seems wrong. I have nothing against affiliate programs...Personally, I don't take the time to put links to my clothes unless it was something I bought recently or bought online and I already know where the link is. I definitely figure that if you were going to take the time to put links, it can make sense to have affiliate links. As long as they're disclosed I can't see why that would be offensive.

  8. Cute color combo ! And I love the details on the shoes! The snow can go away now - like forever!! Except Christmas Day(: I think that the blog is your personal space to use as you like. I read yours because I love your style and I click the buttons on blogs when I am looking for something from that particular blog. I think it is helpful, so keep on keeping on!! Susan

  9. I love your outfit! Even though I'm completely done with the snow, it does make your pictures look pretty!

  10. Exactly! It's almost funny how opinionated people are on GOMI. If certain things upset you so much, why are you spending so much time looking at them on the internet? ;)

  11. Haha! It's always when I am there to get other things and I remember I need tights. But honestly, I feel like the Walmart ones have lasted longer than my ones from other places.

  12. I agree! I think you can find positives about everything so why focus on the negative?! :)

  15. Love the navy/pink combo! And I use affiliate links too but it takes too much time for me so once I am able to cash out (have to reach $100- I'm getting close!), I'll plan to stop using ShopStyle...but I totally get bloggers wanting to use it and am not opposed- I think it's helpful if you like something a blogger is wearing!

  16. Oh man it totally took me months and months! But it is pretty easy to use which I like a lot.

  17. I have no problem with affiliate links, but I don't like the idea of a blogger getting more than a few cents if I decided to buy something from that site-- especially if it's not the same item. From what I understand, if I click on one of your links, and it takes me to Target's website, the next time I am on Target's website, and I buy something, you would get more money. (That may only be through Reward Style, but it seems unfair.) I also won't click popular bloggers' links because I don't want to reward them. Call me anti-elitist, I can handle it. Ultimately, I'm in the same boat as you: too lazy to get worked up over a few cents.

  18. As far as I know, I only get money for clicks. I'm not too familiar with Reward Style. I thought their program was you only get money if someone buys the item, but that is crazy if it is the whole site!

  19. I am very much in love with this outfit! I love navy and pink together, and I am a huge fan of gingham in any form! Pinning this for future inspiration!

  20. One of my favorite things about your blog are the links to the similar items! I love your style and am thrilled that you have done the work to find similar items for me! I think you should be compensated for your time. It will make you more likely to find similar items! Keep up the great work!!!!

  21. this look is adorable
so sorry about the darn snow
honestly, if I had the time I would do affiliate links
i love to click over and check things out

  22. Love that necklace! It definitely adds a little spring to that winter picture. I hope that it does get warmer out soon:) And unfortunately, I'm not too knowledgeable about the affiliate links and ads... I'm just starting out my blog and I'm just trying to get my feet on this blogging ground. But I think I'd rather collaborate with different companies than post ads on my site?

  23. Loving the outfit, though I am not loving that snow. Yuck!! Can't it just warm up already?!?!!

I use Shopstyle, but I've yet to make any actual money because it takes a while for the few cents here or there to add up. I just find it's an easy way to add links, because often, people want to know where bloggers got whatever they're wearing, so it's helpful to just have something to share, rather than scouring the internet aimlessly for a similar piece. I also don't only use affiliate links in my post. For instance, if I bought something at Brandy Melville that's still on their site, I'll link to it, even though I don't make a penny for a click there.

I guess this is just controversial, and I'm not into blogging for the money, but it's nice to see a small return every now and again, right? Ps - I totally haven't made a cent yet! LOL

  27. Yes, if I got something from an online boutique or ebay or something like that, I will just link directly to it. But the affiliate links are so easy for everything else! When I started I didn't realize I had to register my blog so it was like a week before I had any kind of 'return'! And even then it's only a few cents a day typically.

  28. Hi Laura, here is some of my thoughts.
I didn't know how the online marketing works until recently. After that, I have always been more than happy to click on those links whenever I can. It makes me feel good knowing that I am doing something nice to someone out there even though I don't know them. It is not like I am going out of my way to do so. I am hoping most people feel the same and I do believe so too.

However, there are always people trying to find fault of anyone or anything. Most likely, the problem is themselves. They are not capable of solving their own problems. Instead, they find it is much easier to pick on something or somebody else.
Why to be bothered by them?
    Keep on smiling and shining!

  29. Thanks for your thoughts! It seems the vast majority of people don't mind affiliate links at all. I love how you view clicking on them as a favor to the person. Although I am glad they were not talking specifically about my blog, I still think that if it is your blog you should be able to do whatever you would like with it! :)

  31. I don't mind GOMI. Sometimes I get caught up in reading the threads and it's so funny. But then I feel kind of bad, but not really bad enough.

I've been thinking I should really figure out affiliate links, because I link to items. I don't know if anyone clicks on them, but making a few bucks for all the hours I spend blogging might be nice.

  32. It's really not hard to use them and it does take a lot of time out of searching for similar items. I use Shopstyle, but I know some people use RewardStyle. There are probably lots more out there as well!
