When It Rains (or snows), It Pours

Let me tell you a little story. It has nothing to do with this outfit though so just bear with me (but this skirt is black by the way, not dark green as it showed up in pics). Matt and I noticed water leaking in the living room from the ceiling Saturday night. It stopped after several hours and Matt cleared the snow from the roof the next day. We thought it was a one time thing from an ice dam (these are northern vocabulary words people). But we had about 6 inches of snow Tuesday.

So yesterday morning I woke up shuffled out to the kitchen and heard to soothing sound of water flowing in the living room. Wait. We don't have a water feature in our living room. Crap! Oh, and did I mention Matt left on a business trip Monday? I think my neighbors have probably had a good laugh at the lady struggling with the snow blower bigger than her (although the driveway and walkway look GREAT!) and pulling snow off the roof with a roof rake (again, northern vocab). I've kinda been feeling like "Independent Woman" is my theme song lately (or the chorus to"I'm a Survivor"). Nothing like a little Destiny's Child to help you power through it all! Although I will be very happy when Thursday evening comes and I can collapse on the couch and literally and proverbially hand it over to Matt!

Although I am still recovering from the kitchen remodel from this summer and did not want construction for a long, long time maybe this is the shove we need to get new carpeting in the living room. And new walls. We really wanted new walls. Sigh. Is it spring yet??

  1. Oh no! Bad enough with all this snow, but the damage on top of it is terrible, sorry to hear that!

  2. Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear your roof has been leaking, what a horrible thing to happen in the middle of winter with all of your snow! :(

  6. First of all, I LOVE this outfit. I am obsessed with green so I am pretty envious of the whole thing. I just pinned it :)

Secondly, that snow story is crazy. You are definitely using northern terms - it made me realize how much I don't know about snow. I am so sorry for the leaks, but so glad that you have been getting all "independent" through the whole thing. Any excuse to sing Destiny's child is a good thing in my book :)

  7. I love this green! What a great ThredUP find! The snow just keeps falling and falling here in NY too. Maybe it'll stop soon and we can all get onto spring?

  8. Yikes! And yes, there has been a lot of people with damage around here, too! All the damage snow and ice can cause is crazy!

  9. I certainly hope so! And fingers crossed insurance covers a lot of the damage. At least we know a good contractor to repair it!

  10. Thanks Ashley! And Destiny's Child definitely puts you in a better mood no matter what! While I was snow blowing and raking snow from the roof listening to music, I felt pretty darn empowered! ;)

  11. I'm glad it's only the living room and not our bedrooms (knock on wood)! ;)

  12. Green & Leopard = awesome! Your story = so frustrating! Doesn't it always seem like these crazy things happen when the man is out of town?? I hope all this cold and snow is done soon. We are supposed to get more tomorrow.

  14. Hello Laura! I'm loving the leopard with green. I never would have thought to do that kind of pairing. I'm finding out that leopard is just a neutral that can go with any color. I totally have this in my closet and will have to put it together. Thanks for the idea! Have a lovely day!!!

  15. Love the outfit- looks warm and super stylish, as always! Did you blog about your kitchen remodel? I'd love to see it! I think when we get cabin fever, we get even more ideas on how to improve our "cabins"-- we definitely have that going on too!

  16. Green looks superb on you especially bright Kelly Green like this. I am now craving my sweater which is exactly the same (color too) like yours but is in USA. =(

  17. Ugh, oh no. It seems like this kind of stuff always happens to me when Craig is traveling too. Why is that? I guess you have some spring renovations to look forward to, on the bright side. Green is your color, most definitely. So pretty!

  19. oh dear, i hope the leaking doesn't cause too much damage... i wouldn't know the first thing to do to handle that. did the leaking stop when you cleared off the roof?? i guess that's one reason i have to be thankful to live in an apt right now; i don't have to think about roof rakes and ice dams yet, haha. anyway, i really love the green-on-green look you have going on here, i have a sweater and skirt in similar colors so i may have to recreate this look! :)

  20. Oh gosh, I'm sorry to hear about your mishap! We have a leak in our sunroom that causes some chaos when it rains. Let's just say it usually involves my husband climbing on top of a six-foot fence to get on the roof...
Anyway, I am super impressed that you have managed to handle it yourself!
I also really love this outfit. There's something about leopard + green that is so pretty and chic to me.

  21. Yeah, what's that all about!? At least I will know to get out and use the roof rake ASAP now! Lesson learned!

  22. I did! Here is the before: http://whyidodeclaire.blogspot.com/2013/08/kitchen-remodel-bad-and-ugly-aka-before.html
and here is the after: http://whyidodeclaire.blogspot.com/2013/08/kitchen-remodel-much-better-aka-after.html
We love the results, but there are a few things I would have changed if I had to do it again. Remodeling is always tough, but it's so worth it when it's all done!

  23. Thank you Alison! I am definitely hoping I can squeeze new carpeting out of all of this! ;)

  24. Oh man, such good memories. I used to live in Michigan, and the thought of shoveling off the roof or taking foot long plus icicles from the roof fill me with joy. Now that I've moved, I'll have to live vicariously through you. You look so good in green, by the way! I hope the happy colors bring happy weather to you soon!

  25. It's stopped so far and everything is dry again. There are just some wall stains and I had pull back the carpet and remove wet carpet padding. Fingers crossed no more snow! And I just noticed how green my skirt looks in these pics! Ooops! It's a black one, but I think the leather didn't take to my editing so well. :-/

  26. Well at least I didn't have to climb on anything! Just trudge through a foot of snow in my yard! I am waiting for my husband to come home and put salt on the roof to help with the ice melting. I wasn't about to go on a ladder or anything without anyone here (just in case). My daughter isn't old enough to know how to dial 911 yet! ;)

  27. Oh dear Laura, oh dear! I feel so bad for you guys that are getting hammered with snow. Grief! Our weather was wintery again but so minor compared to what you guys have. Roof rake and ice dam are common Utah winter terms, too. Dang, spring hurry up and thaw you guys out.

Darling sweater and wishing for St. Patty's Day, huh. Great ensemble. I love your "bravery in the snow" poses.

  28. I will make sure to dedicate a few shovelfuls of snow and roof rakes to you! Haha! ;)

  32. That would be really cute! And there were a couple other people who thought it was green, too! :)
